Solid colors look best. Prior to a session, we always send our headshot clients a page with recommendations to share with their staff on wardrobe and makeup. For instance, solid colors are going to look better and more professional than large colorful prints or designs. A color that is darker than the subject's skin tone works well because the viewer eye always goes to the lightest value of a photograph first.
Makeup should be a little more than what someone would wear to the office it looks best when evening makeup is used.
Of course the decision on makeup and what to wear is always the clients.
