Motorsports Photography Cover Images

Among Barnet Photography's extensive motorsports portfolio are several cover images for Pando Magazine, the official monthly publication of the Porsche Club of America OCR. Here, they featured a red Cayman that we photographed at an Auto X race held at the parking lot of Angel Stadium in Anaheim, CA. This location is tricky because there are limited attractive backgrounds, and often the least good looking ones were the best places to shoot the cars. This photo op was fortuitous in that it showcases the A logo from the stadium and gives a solid sense of place that better tells a story. Tilting the image here gave it more of a fast feel, and conformed better with the cropping limitations of the magazine cover.

When photographing anything that could end up on the cover of a magazine, it’s a great idea to shoot some vertical images with room on the top for the magazine logo. Very often lesser images are chosen for a cover because the better image simply does not crop well for a cover photo, so it's best to plan a little to offer a great shot at the right orientation.

This image was made with a Nikon D5and a 200 to 400 f4VR Nikkor zoom, my personal favorite lens for outdoor motor sports. Nikon just came out with an improved version of that lens--I tried it and liked it very much, except for the fact that it’s $14,000.00! I think I’ll stick with my previous model...

Location: Anaheim, CA.
